Magnetic Separation of Manganese Ore – Process Flow and Equipment Guide

Manganese ore is an important industrial mineral used in steelmaking, alloy production, batteries, chemicals and other industries. In many deposits, manganese minerals are associated with clay, quartz, iron minerals and other gangue materials. For this reason, beneficiation is often required before manganese ore can be used as a commercial concentrate.

Magnetic separation is one of the common methods used in manganese ore beneficiation, especially for manganese oxide ore and manganese carbonate ore with suitable mineral composition and particle size. This article introduces the classification of manganese ore, the role of strong magnetic separation, typical process flow, practical case references and recommended equipment for manganese ore processing.

Main Types of Manganese Ore

Manganese Oxide Ore

Manganese oxide ore contains manganese mainly in the form of oxide minerals such as pyrolusite, psilomelane and manganite. This type of ore is often formed through weathering and leaching. It may contain clay minerals and fine particles, so washing, screening and classification are often required before magnetic separation.

Manganese Carbonate Ore

Manganese carbonate ore contains manganese mainly in carbonate minerals such as rhodochrosite and manganese calcite. This type of ore is often related to marine sedimentary deposits and may require crushing, grinding, classification and strong magnetic separation to improve manganese grade.

Mixed Manganese Ore

Mixed manganese ore contains both manganese oxide minerals and manganese carbonate minerals. Because the mineral composition is more complex, a single beneficiation method may not be enough. In many cases, gravity separation, magnetic separation and flotation may be combined.

Polymetallic Manganese Ore

Polymetallic manganese ore contains manganese together with iron, lead, zinc, silver or other metallic and non-metallic minerals. For this kind of ore, beneficiation should be designed according to laboratory test results, mineral liberation size and the target concentrate grade.

Why Magnetic Separation Is Used for Manganese Ore

Manganese minerals are generally weak magnetic minerals. Therefore, strong magnetic separation plays an important role in manganese ore beneficiation. For manganese carbonate ore and manganese oxide ore with relatively simple composition and coarse particle size, magnetic separation can often obtain better separation indexes.

When processing manganese carbonate ore, the magnetic field strength of the magnetic separator usually needs to be above 480 kA/m. For manganese oxide ore, a higher magnetic field strength is often required, generally above 960 kA/m. The actual magnetic field intensity should be determined according to ore properties, particle size, manganese grade and gangue composition.

Typical Manganese Ore Beneficiation Process Flow

A complete manganese ore beneficiation line usually includes crushing, screening, grinding, classification, washing, magnetic separation and concentrate collection. The process should be adjusted according to the ore type and particle size distribution.

Typical Process Flow:
Raw Manganese Ore → Crushing → Screening → Grinding → Classification → Washing → Strong Magnetic Separation → Manganese Concentrate

For coarse-grained manganese oxide ore, gravity separation such as jigging can be used for particles above about 5 mm. Fine particles below about 5 mm can be processed by strong magnetic separation. For manganese carbonate ore, fine crushing, grinding, classification and strong magnetic separation are commonly used.

Recommended Equipment for Manganese Ore Processing

  • Jaw Crusher – Used for primary crushing of manganese ore before grinding and separation.
  • Ball Mill – Used for grinding manganese ore to achieve better mineral liberation.
  • Spiral Classifier – Used for classification and particle size control before separation.
  • Magnetic Separator – Used for separating weak magnetic manganese minerals from gangue minerals.
  • Ore Washing Equipment – Used to remove clay, mud and fine impurities from weathered manganese oxide ore.

Magnetic Separation of Manganese Oxide Ore

Most manganese oxide ore belongs to secondary ore formed by weathering and leaching. It often has a soft texture and contains more clay minerals. During mining, transportation and crushing, it is easy to produce mud. Therefore, washing and screening are important steps before beneficiation.

For coarse particles, jigging or other gravity separation methods can be used. For fine particles, strong magnetic separation is often more effective. In practical production, the combination of ore washing, screening, jigging and strong magnetic separation can improve manganese recovery and concentrate grade.

Case Reference: Liancheng Manganese Mine, Fujian Province

The Miaoqian mining area of Liancheng Manganese Mine in Fujian Province is a weathering crust type manganese oxide deposit. The main metal minerals include hard manganese ore, pyrolusite, manganese soil and limonite. The gangue minerals are mainly quartz, sericite, opal and barite, with impurities such as loess and clay.

The process includes ore washing, jigging and strong magnetic separation. After the ore is crushed to less than 70 mm, it is washed, screened and classified. The +30 mm fraction can be manually separated, the 4.5–30 mm fraction can be treated by jigging, and the -4.5 mm fine particles can be separated by high magnetic field magnetic separator.

In this case, strong magnetic separation obtained a concentrate grade of about 41.23% with a recovery rate of about 93.6%, showing the value of combined beneficiation for manganese oxide ore.

Magnetic Separation of Manganese Carbonate Ore

Manganese carbonate deposits are often marine sedimentary deposits with large reserves and stable mining scale. Rhodochrosite and manganese calcite are common manganese carbonate minerals. Compared with manganese oxide ore, manganese carbonate ore usually needs fine crushing, grinding and classification before strong magnetic separation.

Case Reference: Taojiang Manganese Mine, Hunan Province

The strong magnetic separation plant of Taojiang Manganese Mine in Hunan Province processes rhodochrosite and manganese calcite. After fine crushing, grinding and classification, the 0.5–4 mm ore fraction enters the strong magnetic separator for separation, while the 0–0.5 mm fine ore fraction is treated by another strong magnetic separation process. The concentrate is then combined and sintered for further use.

This case shows that manganese carbonate ore beneficiation should pay attention to particle size classification. Different particle sizes may require different separation equipment to achieve stable concentrate quality.

How to Choose a Manganese Ore Processing Solution

The selection of a manganese ore beneficiation process should not depend only on the ore name. It should be based on the actual mineral composition, manganese grade, iron content, clay content, particle size and target concentrate requirement. Before building a production line, ore testing is recommended.

For simple manganese oxide ore, washing, screening, jigging and strong magnetic separation may be suitable. For manganese carbonate ore, crushing, grinding, classification and strong magnetic separation are commonly used. For complex polymetallic manganese ore, flotation or combined beneficiation may be required.

FAQ About Magnetic Separation of Manganese Ore

Can all manganese ore be processed by magnetic separation?

No. Magnetic separation is suitable for some manganese oxide ore and manganese carbonate ore, especially when the manganese minerals have weak magnetic properties and can be separated from gangue minerals. Complex ores may require combined beneficiation methods.

What magnetic field strength is needed for manganese ore?

For manganese carbonate ore, the magnetic field strength is often above 480 kA/m. For manganese oxide ore, stronger magnetic intensity may be required, often above 960 kA/m. The final selection should depend on ore testing.

Is washing necessary before manganese ore magnetic separation?

For weathered manganese oxide ore with high clay content, washing is usually necessary. Washing can remove mud and improve the efficiency of screening, jigging and magnetic separation.

What equipment is commonly used in manganese ore beneficiation?

Common equipment includes jaw crusher, ball mill, spiral classifier, ore washing machine, jig separator and strong magnetic separator. The equipment configuration depends on ore type, capacity and concentrate requirements.
